Six Practical Tools for Labor

Each letter of GIFTED represents a simple, effective strategy couples can use in the moment — supporting comfort, confidence, and progress throughout labor.

G - Gravity

Gravity-Supported Positions

Movement and upright positions help create space within the pelvis and encourage labor progress. Working with gravity is one of the simplest and most effective tools available throughout labor.

Examples

Walking · Standing and swaying · Birth ball sitting · Hands-and-knees · Squatting.

For Husbands

Encourage position changes and help create opportunities for movement while following her lead.

I - Movement

Intentional Movement

Purposeful movement throughout labor can improve comfort and support baby's journey through the pelvis. Movement is not just encouraged — it is one of the most powerful tools a laboring mother has.

Examples

Hip circles · Slow dancing · Lunges · Side-lying release · Rest when needed.

For Husbands

Offer suggestions gently, but trust her instincts. She knows her body.

F - Faith

Faith

Faith anchors the mind and heart during labor. It is not simply an add-on to the birth experience — it is woven into every moment, providing a steady foundation of peace, hope, and courage when labor becomes intense.

Examples

Prayer · Scripture · Worship music · Breath prayers · Faith-filled encouragement.

For Husbands

Your calm presence, prayers, and reminders of God's promises can help foster peace during labor.

"When I am afraid, I put my trust in You." — Psalm 56:3 (NIV)

T - Timing

Thinking & Timing

Encourage restroom breaks every 1–2 hours. A full bladder may reduce available pelvic space and increase discomfort. Observe contraction patterns without becoming consumed by the clock.

Why It Matters

Timing assists with informed decision-making and recognizing labor progress. A full bladder can create unnecessary discomfort and slow labor.

For Husbands

Provide gentle reminders for restroom breaks and assist with contraction timing when needed.

E - Encourage

Encouragement

Consistent encouragement can help mothers remain calm, confident, and focused. Words of affirmation during labor carry more weight than you may realize — speak them often and with intention.

Try Saying

"You're doing beautifully." · "Your body knows what to do." · "I'm right here with you." · "One contraction at a time." · "You are stronger than you know."

For Husbands

You do not need perfect words. Your steady presence often matters most.

D - Hydration

Drink & Deep Breathing

Encourage regular hydration through water, electrolyte drinks, broth, and ice chips. Hydration supports endurance and energy throughout labor. Deep, intentional breathing calms the nervous system and supports progress.

Suggested Breathing Pattern

1. Inhale gently through the nose  ·  2. Exhale slowly and completely  ·  3. Gradually lengthen the exhale.

For Husbands

Model calm breathing and breathe alongside her when appropriate. Offer water and hydration regularly throughout labor.
